Fall is the most important cleanup of the year in Northwest Indiana. What you do before the snow flies determines how your lawn and beds come back in spring. Here is the checklist we work through on properties around Valparaiso and Chesterton.
Stay ahead of the leaves
A thick blanket of wet leaves left on the lawn over winter smothers the grass and invites mold and disease. The goal is not to wait until every leaf is down and tackle it once β it is to keep them cleared as they fall so they never mat down.
Cut back and clean up the beds
Spent perennials, annuals, and overgrowth should be cut back and the beds cleared. This is also the right time to pull lingering weeds before they seed, and to deal with any branches or debris that came down over the season.
The full fall checklist
- Clear leaves from the lawn and beds (more than once as needed)
- Cut back perennials and ornamental grasses
- Final mows at the right height heading into dormancy
- Edge and tidy beds for a clean winter look
- Haul away all debris, branches, and yard waste
Why it is worth doing right
A property that goes into winter clean and cut back greens up faster, has fewer disease problems, and needs less work in spring. Skipping fall cleanup almost always means a rougher, slower spring start.
