Porter sits right at the gateway to the Indiana Dunes, and being that close to Lake Michigan changes the ground you are working with. The soil here runs sandy and dune-influenced, which drains fast and dries out quicker than the clay you find further inland. That is a different problem than most of Northwest Indiana deals with.
