One of the most common questions we get from homeowners in Valparaiso and Chesterton is whether to use mulch or decorative rock in their landscaping beds. Both can look sharp. The right answer depends on the plants in the bed, how the bed drains, and how much maintenance you want to take on.
When mulch is the better choice
Mulch is the go-to for beds with shrubs, perennials, and seasonal plantings. As it breaks down it feeds the soil, holds moisture through our hot, humid summers, and keeps roots cooler. It also gives that clean, dark, finished look most homeowners want around the front of the house.
- Best for planted beds, foundation plantings, and tree rings
- Improves the soil as it decomposes
- Lower upfront cost
- Needs a refresh roughly once a year to keep the color and depth
When rock makes more sense
Decorative rock and gravel shine in spots where you want a permanent, low-maintenance surface: along the side of the house, in drainage areas, around downspouts, or in beds with just a few hardy plants. It does not break down, so you are not replacing it every season.
- Best for drainage zones, side yards, and low-plant areas
- Long-lasting β no annual refresh
- Higher upfront cost, but less ongoing spend
- Holds heat, so it is not ideal around moisture-loving plants
A practical middle ground
Plenty of Northwest Indiana properties use both: mulch in the planted front beds where it benefits the plants, and rock along the foundation and drainage lines where low maintenance wins. Whatever you choose, the install matters as much as the material β proper edging, depth, and a clean base are what make it look professional and last.
